How to choose a toll-free provider without regretting it later

Toll-free is deceptively simple to set up and surprisingly hard to do well. Here's the checklist we wish more buyers used.

How to choose a toll-free provider without regretting it later

Every toll-free pitch looks the same on the surface: 800/888/877/866/855/844/833 numbers, low per-minute rates, fast porting. The differences only show up under load.

The questions that actually matter

  • Who's the underlying RespOrg, and how long have they held that designation?
  • What's the inbound capacity per number, and what happens when you blow past it?
  • Is termination billed separately from origination, and are the rates symmetric?
  • How fast do they handle ring-no-answer and false-answer disputes?

Porting is where you'll feel the pain

Numbers move between providers every day, and yet ports go sideways more often than anyone admits. Ask for an SLA on port completion and a named human who owns the queue.

The unsexy advice

Pick a provider whose support team you can call. Not chat. Not a ticket form. A phone. Toll-free, of course.
